Could someone (listowner?) please clarify the purpose of this list, (For
example, what is appropriate to post and what is not?) and the netiquette
rules being observed by this group?
I receive postings in digest format, and the past few days, I have seen more
heated debate and conflict of personalities than family tree info. being
exchanged. While debate certainly has its place in all intelligent societies,
in a few cases, it seems to have resorted to just plain name calling and
insults.
In comparison, the exact same post (re: clipping obits) was on the Luzerne
list, and did not receive a single 'flame'. Some people commented, either in
favor or against it, and others just ignored it.
The 'flaming' seems to be rather common on this list.
I'd be most appreciative if someone could clarify the netiquette so that all
list participants are working towards a similar purpose. Each time a series
of flames begins, it seems that several people unsubscribe, or ask about
alternate lists.
I have hesitated to speak up previously, because I knew I would get 'flamed'
for expressing my opinion.
I fully expect someone to criticize my intelligence, morals, the amount of
time I volunteer, the amount of time I have been subscribed to the list, how
often I floss my teeth, my typing or syntax because I've posted this.
I guess that will be the litmus test that will help me (and possibly others)
to decide whether to continue to participate.
