Hi-
I have been lurking on the list for a while and admire the generosity of
those who do look ups and offer well thought out advice. I have a
situation that I would appreciate any "where to go from here" suggestions.
William Morison, age 15, arrived in Philadelphia on Oct 22, 1800 on the
schooner, Little Tom Butler, from Jamaica. (Note: the one "r" in the
surname is consistent except when misspelled by census takers and clerks.)
Later records confirm that he was born in Ireland. He does not appear in
the 1800 Philadelphia census but is in the 1810 census.
Little Tom Butler apparently made regular trade runs from the West Indies;
I have documentation of two other trip from St Thomas. So it is assumed
that he didn't get to Jamaica from Ireland on the Little Tom Butler.
Naturalization papers in 1913 indicate not only that he has been in the US
for 13 years, but also that he was in the US between 1798 and 1802.
Possible scenarios: He arrived somewhere in the US, by some route, in
1798, with or without his family. Between 1798 and 1800 he went to the West
Indies, and returned to Philadelphia in 1800
My objective is to find where in Ireland he originated.
Any suggestions for a further course of research will be much appreciated.
Thanks for reading this.
