Subject: [PHILLY-ROOTS-L] Front St.--Some History from someone who was raised on Front street
Date: Tue, 1 Dec 1998 23:49:49 EST
Hi Everybody,
For those of you who wonder what was on front street at one time, let me tell
you. I was raised on South Front St. It was at one time a very thriving
community. With MOM & POP grocery stores, Funeral Parlors, Factories, Butcher
Shops, Drug Stores, Slaughter Houses, and place to take old clothes to get
weight for cash and the railroad not only was on Delaware Ave. it was also on
Water Street which was between Front Street & Delaware Avenue. There were
Apartment Alley's, one & two & three story houses. The streets were gray
cobblestones. Unfortunately this all came to a halt because of I-95 coming
through Front Street & Water St. back in the early 60's. Those of us living
on the wrong side of Front Street had to move. IM a very lucky person to have
experienced the people and that era.
If anyone would like to know more about Front Street, just write me privately.
I don't know much but I do remember sites and sounds and some locations of
businesses. I will try and help anyway I can, as long as the mind holds out.
Happy Holidays Everybody!!!!!
Sincerely,
Betty
