Subject: [PHILLY-ROOTS-L] Registration of deaths & newspaper death notices
Date: Wed, 1 Sep 1999 14:08:52 EDT
Resources for determining date of death:
After 1806, check Cemetery Returns (avail. at Phila. City Archives, Free
Lib. of Phila. Main Branch, LDS/Mormons, HSP). The Cemetery Returns Index
will tell you the name, age, cause of death, physician and place of burial.
The Returns are indexed alphabetically and typed. If you find the name you
want in the Returns index, then you can request a copy of the actual Cemetery
Return, which might have additional information. This is obtainable from
Phila. City Archives. Indexes of newspaper obits (Free Lib. of Phila., HSP)
-- go to the Free Library of Phila.'s Genealogy Pathfinder
(http://www.library.phila.gov/central/ssh/waltgen/geneal1.htm [note:
preceding the ".htm" is a lowercase L followed by the number one]) series of
articles -- there is one about researching deaths. This article has a list of
the newspaper indexes available for death notices and obituaries.
Death records July 1, 1860 to 1903 only, on microfilm at Hist. Soc. of
Penna. (HSP), 1300 Locust St., Phila., PA.
