Marion, as I read your post I'm sitting here with an ancestor's 1888
petition in front of me. Here is the information it provides:

His native country
The date he filed his first declaration
The court in which he filed his declaration
His age when he filed his declaration
The length of time he had been in the U.S.
His residence address in 1888
The name of his sponsor (in his case, a relative)
The sponsor's address in 1888
The signatures of my ancestor and his sponsor

Maybe I just got lucky with this document, but IMHO it's a wealth of
genealogical facts and clues worth the cost of a copy. Even if you've
already gathered some of the facts from other sources, the petition is
corroborating evidence. The signatures may help distinguish your ancestor's
other signed records from those of people of the same name.

Hope this helps,

Marla in CA

that they had filed? >
