Subject: [PHILLY-ROOTS-L] City directories

I am very fortunate to have the Philly city directories, as well as those of
many other cities, in addition to all of the censuses, nearby in the Miami,
FL's main branch of the library. Anyone needing access to these might want to
call his/her local main branch library before trying another route. I tried
another city first, which had nothing, but they directed me to Miami. Of
course I know that not everyone has these available to them. In gratitude for
the information I've gotten from this list, I've done countless free
look-ups. Of course no one is going to look up 40 pages for a stranger, but
I've often just looked up a few pages when one is trying to narrow something
down, e.g. when a woman was 1st listed as a widow, or when an address is
needed.

My personal opinion is still that there are several ways to get copies that
are less expensive than $2.50 per page when one lives outside of Philly. This
is not an attack on the Germantown Historical Society, simply an opinion on
their fees. Leflynn's suggestion that the $25 is also a contribution (non
tax deductible because you received something in return) to the historical
society is a good one for those interested in paying that amount.
