That's what I meant when I wrote that the directories list "heads of
household whether employed or not," in addition to listing employed members
of the household. When the husband dies, his widow becomes the head of
household and will be listed in the next city directory EVEN IF she is NOT
employed. If she is unemployed, she'll be listed as "widow"; if employed, an
occupation will be given. Retired men (i.e., unemployed) who are heads of
households are also listed, either without an occupation or as "gentleman"
(i.e., of independent financial means).
