Subject: [PHILLY-ROOTS-L] Seeking information on Monument's monuments
Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 12:45:00 -0500

Dear List Members,
I'm aware that Monument Cemetery on North Broad Street was demolished in
the 1950s, the bodies moved to a suburban cemetery and the monuments
disposed of. I've read that some of the monuments were used as pilings for
the Betsy Ross Bridge. Does anyone know if all the monuments were disposed
of this way? I'm trying to see if any of the monuments designed by
Philadelphia artist and engraver John Sartain were saved. Specifically,
his family monument with the sphinx on top; the massive gatehouse and
tower; and the monument to Washington and Lafayette that gave the cemetery
its name. Does anyone have any idea what became of these?

I've also heard that John Sartain was the president of the Monument
Cemetery Company at one point. Does anyone have any information on this?

Many thanks,
Tom Keels
