Black Troops Present Living History at Peter Mott House
Members of the 22nd U.S. Colored Troops will set up camp at the Peter Mott
House on Sunday, April 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. for a commemoration of the firing
on Fort Sumter and the start of the Civil War.
The 22nd is a group of living historians, led by Sgt. Rashid Khan, who dress
in authentic uniforms to educate the public on the role of these African
American men in the Civil War.
More than 300,000 Black men fought for the Union Army in the war. Many were
already free themselves but pressed to be allowed to serve. Once enlisted,
they fought valiantly. The 22nd, trained in Philadelphia like the 3rd and
6th U.S. Colored Troops, operated in Virginia for much of the war.
The Camden County Historical Society is co-sponsor with LHS for the event
which is part of regional commemorative activities. Peter Mott will greet
the soldiers and other guests. The requested donation is $2.
The CCHS is running buses from its location in Camden to the Mott House. The
cost of $5 includes admission to the Mott House.

Society Sponsors Trip to Black Towns Exhibit
The Lawnside Historical Society, Inc., is sponsoring a trip to see the
exhibit, Small Towns, Black Lives at the Noyes Museum in Oceanville, N.J. on
Saturday, April 26. The exhibit features photographs by Wendel A. White, a
professor at Stockton State College who has committed more than 12 years to
documenting the Black towns of Southern New Jersey.
Mr. White has photographed Lawnside, Chesilhurst, Swedesboro, Whitesboro,
Elsmere Springtown, Gouldtown and more.
The Noyes Museum will host a special reception and program from 12:30 to 3
p.m. on that day for residents and officials of the featured towns. Mr.
White will make a presentation and each municipality will receive a copy of
the impressive hard cover catalog, which includes photographs from the
exhibit.
Mr. White's images help to rediscover some communities lost to time and
forgotten elements of "community" that, while unique, transcend race, social
status and geography. Accompanying the exhibition are a Web site that, in
addition to photographs includes rare audio and video footage documenting
important residents and events, and an array of programs.
The bus will depart Lawnside Borough Hall, 4 Douglas Avenue at 10 a.m. and
return about 5 p.m.
Tickets are $15. To purchase them no later than April 21, contact Mattie
Warren at 856-547-8269.
The exhibit will travel after it closes at the Noyes on April 27. Visit
these Web sites for more detail: PeterMotthouse.com, Blacktowns.org, or
www.noyesmuseum.org.
