I have a quick question. I recently obtained the funeral home records for my great-grandparents, Frank Haines Townsend and Elizabeth Shiffler Townsend.

Elizabeth died in 1969 and the funeral home records list her SSN the same as Frank's except with a "B" following the number. The records for Frank list the same number with an "A" following it.

Has any one seen this before? Was it common practice in the early days of the SS system to assign spouses the same number? A search of the SSDI for this number only return Frank, not Elizabeth. Is there a chance that I might actually be able to find an application for Elizabeth using this number?

Thanks!

Julie
