Chris --
If they were born in Württemberg (Wuertemberg or Wurtemberg, usually, in
English), what do you think the chances are that they emigrated through
Württemberg?? Sounds likely to me. ;-)

The Württemberg Emigration Index is an 8-volume work that is available
in book form in many libraries, online with an Ancestry subscription
(cross-referencing the FHL numbers), or on CD-ROM (first 7 volumes only)
from Ancestry. See http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/wuerttemberg.html
(and below) for details.

More importantly, if you don't have an Ancestry subscription, is that
Württemberg is putting their index info online for free (on a
German-language site). If you can't read German, go to the bottom of
the above web page for directions on how to search the German-language
page.

Note that the link from the above page is to
http://www.auswanderer.lad-bw.de/cgi-bin/main.pl -- an old form of the
site. Try instead
http://auswanderer2.lad-bw.de:8080/auswanderer/index.htm -- which is
still all in German (an English version is in progress and due in
"spring 2003," it says). From this page, click on the German flag,
then, in the left column, on "Recherche," then on "Suchformular." Fill
in the search form and click on "Anfrange senden."

When you get a match you want to look at, click on the radio button (so
a dot appears in the circle) to select the record, then click on the
"eye" logo for more info. (A search on the old site that's linked to
from weemonster's site will not get you this level of detail, which is
why I say you should use the newer version of the site). Anyway, here's
the info columns that might help you, with my loose translation:

Name (obvious!)
Familienstand (Marital Status)
Konfession (Religion)
Beruf (Occupation)
Ort (Town)
Amt (District Office)
Emigrationsjahr (Year of Emigration)
Emigrationsdatum (Date of Emigration)
Zielland (Destination)
Anzahl Erwachsene (No. of Adults in Party)
Unterstützung (Supported by -- how much money and from what source)
Bürge (Sponsor -- who paid the passage)

Unfortunately, not all entries have all this info.

One search I did, and have not been able to replicate, brought up a
Joseph Maurer, from Gottenheim, in Freiburg im Breisgau (which today has
only 2500 inhabitants, per the Gottenheim site):

Name: Maurer, Joseph
Ort: Gottenheim, FR
Amt: Breisach (BRI)
Emigrationsjahr: 1855
Zielland: Nordamerika

I like that he emigrated in 1855 -- the right time for your Joseph, who
had a child Geneva (supposedly) born in Württemberg c. 1856-7. Anyway,
good luck playing around with the Württemberg Emigration Index (esp.
with various spelling permutations) in whatever form you can access it.

Hope that helps.
Claire K.
