In the beginning of the war the North thought it would be a short war. They
only enlisted men for 3 months. After they realized it would be a long haul,
the enlistment period was changed to 3 years. During times when the South
invaded Northern territory, there were a few emergency enlistment's for 9 months.
If you are interested in Civil War information there is a new book out by
Michael Burkhimer. It lists the top 100 Lincoln books and gives a breakdown of
the information you can get from each. I believe it is published by Cumberland
House.
