Greetings to all,
I have been following the current "tempest in a teacup" over Plant v. Plantagenet with great interest. It certainly has "hotted up" a listserv which has been rather slow as of late. I had meant to stay out of the controversy, but...
Kevin Bradford wrote: "This is all so much whistling in the wind, a desperate attempt to garner the ducal house to one's own family tree. It hardly deserves to be taken seriously. Genealogists require solid evidence, and there just don't seem to be any here."
I agree. I looked over the "evidence" submitted by Mr Plant, read the messages, and went to the web sites for which he sent URLs. As of yet, I have not seen anything which proves Plantagenet descent. "Characteristic Y-line signature" certainly sounds impressive enough; a lineage would be better and, as Mr Bradford has commented, one has yet to be provided. Why? I certainly could not find one on the aforementioned sites. Perhaps I wasn't looking in the right places. The "Lofsensic Ursinius" order also seemed quite portentous until, like Mr Bradford, I went a-Googling and found the same results (or lack of them).
Can one assume descent because a name "sounds like" another, or because someone said many years ago that it might be possible? Given this line of reasoning, I think I will try to see if can claim descent from Shakespeare through Sir William Davenant, because Davenant allegedly said so. It's an exceedingly slim chance that I actually descend from Davenant at all, but I am intrepid.
However, thanks are in order for making my Inbox a more interesting one. I look forward to further developments!
Sincerely,
MJ Hoth
