My own ancestry is Stewart which ends with James IV I think. Stuart is the French spelling of the name. Cousins, correct me if I'm wrong, but it was James VI that spelled it with the French spelling and his son because of his Bourbon wife.

Subject: [PDP] Stuart or Stewart?

I am a relative novice when it comes to research in Scotland, England and
Wales, so please allow me some indulgence with a beginners question?

I seen a lot of research on the Stuarts/Stewarts (both royal and otherwise)
and one very confusing issue to me is the "proper" spelling of the name.
Some show the lineage as STUART and others show the very same lineage as
STEWART.

My question is -- which is the correct way to show the lineages of this
family? Are the spellings used interchangeably or is there some point in
history where one becomes the other? One researcher told me that the
spelling is purely a matter of family preference, but that sounds a little
too simple!

Can someone guide me the proper method for recording this family?

Anthony
