DELAYED BIRTH CERTIFICATES
Delayed birth certificates were often filled out for people who were
born before the government started recording vital statistics. Delayed
birth certificates go back to the 1850's and 1860's. You can find
delayed birth books at your county clerk's office. If you have an
ancestor who lived past 1935 and didn't have a regular birth
certificate, he or she may have filed a delayed birth certificate in
order to apply for Social Security benefits. To file a delayed birth
certificate, people needed two types of documents to verify their
birth, such as a school record and a doctor's affidavit.
