FINDING SHIP PASSENGER LISTS FOR ROUTES ALONG GREAT LAKES

Many immigrants were called the "two-boat people" because they sailed
first to Canada and then to the United States via the Great Lakes.
They did this because it was cheaper to buy a ticket to Canada than to
buy a ticket directly to the United States. Also, there was a time
when immigration rules and regulations prevented them from going
directly to the United States, but allowed them to go to Canada
instead.

To find records of these immigrants, you should search the passenger
lists of ships that maintained routes on the Great Lakes. Some of
these records are kept in the public libraries of large cities along
the Great Lakes, such as Duluth, Minnesota, and Chicago. You can also
find passenger lists and arrival lists in local newspapers from that
time period.
