Research into slave roots done with pride

Evelyn Nabors has made the trip from Chicago to the rural South about 15
times in search of a document that would link her to her slave ancestors.

Her research, now back to about 1870, shows her family included hardworking
and humble farmers after the Civil War. Before then, she suspects those
relatives were held in bondage as slaves.

When she finds the elusive proof, she wants to join the International
Society of Sons and Daughters of Slave Ancestry, a Chicago-based lineage
society that claims to be the only one of its kind in the country. Membership
is open to those who can prove they have slaves in their family trees. >>
