Angela asked about William Goodwin. You may want to check www.cyndislist.com or other sites to find out what questions were asked on the 1840 Census. I have seen Free White Persons designations myself -- it may be to differentiate them from blacks. Also, the unnamed people may have been slaves. Again, you should check to see what questions were asked.
(As an aside, this is a somewhat similar scenario: I was reading the Mason Co., KY tax lists from 1790-something through the 1850s. At some point in the records, "Slave" categories were changed to "Negro slaves." I took this to mean that slaves were (always) black.... Never found an explanation for the change....)
