Subject: Siblings in the Law Suit - Rachel Whitney
Date: Tue, 26 Apr 2005 20:13:05 -0400

Rachel Poindexter and her husband Aaron Whitney were listed as deceased
with no known heirs in the lawsuit in Jackson Co TN. However, this is not
the case. Correspondence with a descendant indicates that Aaron & Rachel
left for Howard Co Missouri, possibly as early as 1820. This researcher
did not know Rachel's maiden name nor anything about Rachel's family until
the abstract of the lawsuit appeared on the Internet. She did know Aaron
Whitney had come from Jackson Co, TN.

WIFE NOTES: Rachel POINDEXTER
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General:

Married Aaron Whitney and both were dead before 1865. "No children known."

Whitneys are said to have come from South Carolina to Tennessee shortly after
1800. Aaron and his brother Wade [note the name Wade is used again in the
family] served in the War of 1812 in Col James Raulston's 3rd Regt West
Tennessee Militia from Jackson Co TN. A Samuel Poindexter served in the same
regiment and could be Rachel's brother. My husband's collateral
ancestor, Willis Pippin of Jackson Co TN, is also said to served with
Raulston.
A list of this unit can be found here:
http://www.tngenweb.org/jackson/Jack1812.htm

I have heard from a descendant of this couple. Aaron & Rachel left for
Howard Co MO, perhaps as early as 1820. Certainly they are there in the 1830
Howard Co census:
Aaron Whitney: 3m 5-10, 1m 30-40; 1f -5, 1f 10-15, 1f 30-40
[This would indicate Rachel was born between 1790 and 1800. Also they did
have children - perhaps just no contact with relatives left behind.]

In 1840, they were still in Howard Co:
1m 10-15, 1m 15-20, 1m 20-30, 1m 40-50; 1f 10-15, 1f 40-50, 1f 50-60
[Seems the last two females were placed in the wrong column - or there's an
older female boarder. The family believes this older female may be the
widow of
Aaron Whitney's father Joseph who had died in Howard Co. Joseph had been
there
in Howard Co MO in 1830, as age 60-70.]

The Whitney researchers have not been able to determine why Aaron Whitney left
Howard Co and was in Lawrence Co Arkansas in 1842, but that's where they found
the following Probate. Rachel appeared to still be alive for the 1840
census, but is
not included in the probate in 1842.

From the Whitney Researcher:
1842 Lawrence Co AR Probate
Aaron Whitney died Aug 1842.
Heirs: Elizabeth Reed, wife of John Reed of Dade Co MO, Thomas J. Whitney of
Bates Co MO, James M., Wade H. & Rachel Whitney of Lawrence Co AR.
There was an inquest 26 Aug 1842; the verdict was that Aaron Whitney died by
shooting himself in the right temple with a pistol.
Since there is no mention of a spouse, presumably Rachel died between 1840 and
Aug 1842.

There was additional information re Rachel, the daughter of Aaron & Rachel
Poindexter Whitney. She married (1) James M. Hudson by whom she had two
children William born about 1847 and Elizabeth born 1849. She married (2)
Joshua Elso and is with him on the 1860 census for Holt Co MO. This
indicates
Rachel was born 1829 in Missouri which fits the profile for when the family
came
to Missouri.
1860, Holt Co MO, Household 1044: Joshua Kelso, age 29, b. Iowa
Rachel, age 31, b. MO
William A. Hudson age 13, Elizabeth Hudson age 11, Sarah A. Kelso age 5,
John A.
Kelso age 3, Harriet L. Kelso age 1 and James P. Kelso age one month.

Also living in Holt Co MO in 1850 was Thomas Whitney - he'd apparently moved
since the Probate records of 1842. The family tradition is that Rachel & her
two Hudson children lived with Thomas & that Kelso was a neighbor. The 1850
Census does have Joshua "Kelsan" living next door to Thomas with the family of
Joseph Scott. Thomas does seem to have his wife's family living with them.
Their relationship to Daniel Combs who married Malinda Poindexter, a
daughter of
James, and niece of Rachel Poindexter, is unknown.
1850, Holt Co MO, Household 140
Thomas Whitney, age 31, b. Tennessee [b. 1819 or so]
Susan Whitney, age 28, b. KY [she is said to be Susan Combs]
William Combs age 22, b. KY
Melisa Combs 17, b. KY
John Combs, 14, b. KY
James Combs, 12, b. KY
Silas Combs, 5, b.KY
Thomas J. Whitney, age 5, b. MO [this would seem to be the only child of
Thomas & Susan]

Remarkably there is also a Poindexter family in Holt Co MO. This would
seem to
be pure coincidence, however, and not related to this problem, since this
young
man was born in Virginia.
In 1850, R. J. Poindexter was age 24, merchant, b. VA. Elizabeth age 21,
b. VA,
and James, 11 months, b. MO
In 1860, R. J. Poindexter was age 34, farmer, b. VA, Elizabeth F. age 31,
b. VA,
James M. age 10, George R age 7, and Edwards D. age 4, all born in MO

CHILD NOTES: Elizabeth WHITNEY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General:

Married John Reed of Dade Co MO according to 1842 probate records of her
father.
I have not been able to find this couple in the census records of Dade Co MO.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CHILD NOTES: Thomas J. WHITNEY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General:

Listed of Bates Co MO in probate records of his father in 1842. He was
found in
1850 census in Holt Co MO.

1850, Holt Co MO, Household 140
Thomas Whitney, age 31, b. Tennessee [b. 1819 or so]
Susan Whitney, age 28, b. KY [she is said to be Susan Combs]
William Combs age 22, b. KY
Melisa Combs 17, b. KY [Melissa later married Thomas' brother Wade]
John Combs, 14, b. KY
James Combs, 12, b. KY
Silas Combs, 5, b.KY
Thomas J. Whitney, age 5, b. MO [this would seem to be the only child of
Thomas & Susan]

The family believes that Thomas joined his brother Wade in Nebraska but died
there before 1860.
