Karyn,
One thing I hate to bring up (but I believe more people researching
Polish lines need to be aware of this possibility) is that I found around 15
of my family surnames--meaning, I found around 15 actual people who have
three of my relatives' surnames--in the Auschwitz Death Books. They were
Greek Catholic, not Jewish. The first prisoners at Auschwitz were Poles,
and it didn't seem to matter what religion they happened to be. Hitler
wanted to wipe out Poles. The Jews there began by cleaning up the barracks
for the Poles who were brought in, before they were prisoners there
themselves.
It was a very sobering afternoon, finding those books among others for
Galicia. I never would have expected to look there for my ancestors. I
believe one is probably my grandmother's brother.
It's quite amazing what we can find out once we start looking. I had a
hunch I'd find family among those three volumes although I hoped I would
not.
