Debbie,
The consulate works with the archives and is part of Poland's
foreign ministry department. And as far as genealogist not finding the
record certain costs must be evaluated such as what archives charges,
genealogist charges and any additional cost. The cost in my case for
archives would have exceeded $35.00 for record search and copying. Also
to the fact even though having the best genealogist in Poland doing
research for me - Joe Taran and he could not locate it. So I took a
gamble with the consulate and they where able to get it for me. I have
informed Joe about getting records from USC and I told him like getting
records from him because they are cheaper. But, Joe has been able to get
into certain records not public yet with cooperation of Archive
director. I talk to him almost on a daily basis through ICQ and I have
referred him to LDS for people interested in Polish research. I also
have the utmost confidence in his ability and that I will not have to
deal with archive directly because he knows how to.

How much did you pay for the records? Which consulate did you contact?
I'd like to point out that the consulate had nothing to do with the
finding of a record a Polish genealogist could not find. The fact is,
I'm sure, the archives found it. If you or the Polish genealogist had
approached the archives directly, the archives would have come up with
the same record. What we're trying to determine is whether there is any
real benefit in using the Polish consulate as an intermediary.
