I don't mean to get off the topic of the site, but did notice there is some discussion of computer programs, i.e., Klooz and FTM.

I currently use PAF5 along with PAF Companion 5 (which makes nice box charts, descendents/ancestry/fan, etc.). Unfortunately, when they upgraded to PAF5, instituting UNICODE, which permitted the use of Cyrillics, they failed to do that for their PAF Companion 5 upgrade.

I contacted them and discovered, the "would do that when the next upgrade came out." Well I have been waiting over a year and am getting fed up.

I want to keep PAF, because of its huge base of users, and the fact that the LDS church will support their program and will not go bankrupt like companies; however, my patience is wearing thin. In addition, their program and upgrades are free, (with the exception of the Companion disc which is apprx $10, cheap enough).

I have noticed The Master Genealogist (TMG) is currently on sale, for about $80., version 7, I think, via the internet.

Does anyone have an outstanding knowledge of this program ? I want to know the following:

q1. In switching from PAF5 to TMG, will all data be saved correctly ? (I was given the impression there could be a problem with the Notes of PAF5, which is where most of my typing and information is.

q2. PAF5 is relatively simple to operate the basics. TMG is much more complicated. Is there a big learning curve before one can operate the basics, correctly ?

q3. Is there a lot of time needing to be invested in order to operate the program to its fullest potential ?

q4. Does it use Unicode?

q5. Has anyone, switched from PAF to TMG, and if so, what problems have you encountered, and is it worth it ?

I am into my genealogy seriously, but so far have found the PAF program adequate for my needs, with the exception of the language problem. I plan to put as much of my data as possible into English, German, Polish, Russian, & Ukrainian.

I would like to be able to toggle, if possible, from language to language, or in the alternative, be able to view all entries, with all languages printed simultaneously.

q6. How big do the files get in TMG, when one adds photos ?

q7. I know in PAF, the images are stored elsewhere, and the program only provides a link to the images that appear in the family group sheets. Is it better to have this system ?

q8. Or is it better to have the images stored within the program itself ? (I plan to eventually put sound and video clips, which I think PAF permits links to.)

I store my pieces of information within the NOTES section of PAF5, having different paragraph headings such as:

Name Variations:

Town Name Variations & Language written in:

Coordinates of Town:

Biography:

Medical Conditions:

Date of Emmigration:

Port:

Ship:

Date of Entry:

Port:

Naturalization:

Addresses and dates:

and whatever other topics I decide are useful, including notes to myself as to what my thoughts are for further development.
