Finally! My long anticipated letter from the priest in Jaslo has arrived.
He sent me 3 typewritten pages of letter, and 10 pages of Ochwat families,
dating from 1785 to 1904. I finally know who my grandparents parents were.
I also think I have found the secret that no one ever talked about, the
reason why my mother did not approve of my search. And guess what. I was
not struck by lightning, the ground did not open up and swallow me, the sun
still rose this morning. Life goes on! Only now I know more about my
family. (I still have not told my mother though)
As I try to sift thru all the marriages and try to interpret the letter (with
the help of a dictionary), how do I connect the families? I know the obvious
way is to find children of the same parents. A lot of these marriages seem
to have no connection whatsoever. Would the priest give me any and all of
the people with that last name?
What makes it somewhat interesting is that my grandmother had the same last
name before and after marriage. Plus both of my great grandmothers had the
same first name. I know to look at the birthdates to help sort things out.
What really amazes me is the repetition of names. Not just first names, but
last names as well. How can I figure out relationships?
I think my search is only beginning..........
Judy
