For those who were hoping to get those free, uncertified death records
from the State of Illinois Archives, you're out of luck. As of November,
2002, the state started charging. Too many requests is the reason. Guess
Illinois didn't consider all the researchers who would be requesting
ancestral death records.
However, if you visit the archives in person you can get a free copy,
presumably because you will be allowed to look up your own records.
If you can't visit Springfield then requests should be directed to the
Illinois Department of Public Health or to the county clerk's office of
the
county where the death occurred.
