Folks,

I would like to expand a little on the comments made by Joe and Fred.
And hopefully it will not complicate the situation even further.

The original note from Marie asked for clarification on -ski/-ska
surname endings. And Joe provided the definitive reason, namely, that in
Polish grammar adjectives take on the gender of the noun (subject) that
they modify. Hence we have the distinction between the male and female
forms.

However, Marie's example "Gruszka" (a noun) does not deal with that
ending. It is in a separate category that does not include very many
adjectives. We might want to take a look at the situation that actually
occurs for any ending of the form -ki/-ka that is preceded by one of the
letters c or ć, s or ś, cz, dz, dż, rz or sz.

And those who fall asleep when technical data is presented may wish to
stop reading now. :)

I did a search of Rymut's modified 2002 database of surnames used in
Poland and came up with the statistics shown in the table below. The
database contains 341055 surnames. Almost a third of them, 105551, fall
into the categories listed below.

This list gives you the number as well as Male/Female population counts
for surnames with the selected ending. From this list we can see, for
example, that the endings -cki/-cka are essentially gender specific but
not completely so while -cko endings are gender neutral.

On the other hand, the endings -szki/-szka are gender neutral. In other
words, these endings are not considered adjectival in nature.

You may wish to reach similar conclusions with the other listed endings.
And others may derive more information from the listing.

Cheers,

Roman
