As far as I am aware mainland police (excluding Ireland) have never
been routinely armed. Access to firearms (and cutlasses) in the early
days was almost certainly fairly easy, but never for routine patrol.
I am pretty sure that Intelligence Service personnel are permitted to
carry guns. Not every Tom, Dick and Harry. Only those where their
field work necessitates this.
Any one else confirm - or reject this?
