Liverpool Docks have been the responsibility of the Liverpool City
Police Authority, and have been policed by Liverpool Police since
1835, when the force was formed. Before that date the Dock Watch
performed this function.
The successors to Liverpool City Police were Liverpool and Bootle
Constabulary in 1967 then Merseyside Police in 1974.
Watch was the term used in early policing hence forces had watch
committees now called police authorities who oversee the chief
constables running of the force.
