Duncan,

Your David GRIFFITHS would ,as an acting Inspector, have been a Sergeant who was 'acting up' to the next rank which was Inspector. The order was Constable,
Sergeant, Inspector then Superintendent, I don't think they had Chief Inspector rank then. In those days in a 'provincial' force in Wales, to be an acting Inspector
would have been an achievement.It would have been most unusual for a Constable to 'act up' more than one rank.More recently officers 'acting up' in rank have
usually passed the police promotion exam for the next rank.I don't know if that was the case then.
