Subject: [Police-UK] John TALBOT-Metropolitan police or City of London police?
Date: Tue, 11 Nov 2003 19:07:03 -0000
Hi List
I am new to this list & wonder whether you will be able to answer my query. My ggg grandfather, John TALBOT, was a police constable. From the births of his children I have been able to narrow down the approximate time he joined the force. In 1845, he was a baker living in Drury Lane, St Clement Danes, Westminster. By 1849 he was a police constable & had moved to Plough Court, St Clement Danes, Westminster, which is very close to the City. He was still a police constable by 1865 at the marriage of one of his sons. I have yet to find him in census returns after the 1841census.
Does anyone know which force he is most likely to have joined?
Interestingly, according to the 1841 census his profession was police (no other words on return), but his marriage cert., a birth certificate & baptism register all say he was a baker in 1839, 1843 & 1845. Would there have been part time constables at that time?
Hope someone can help
Regards
