Subject: Family Tree Legends - software review

Hi Folks,

Earlier today I sent this to another list after I had promised them
I'd send them a review of Family Tree Legends. Since Dick Eastman
has already written a very nice review and he's such a better
writer than me I instead referred them to his article from his
newsletter:
http://www.rootsforum.com/newsletter/#FamilyTreeLegends

Then I went ahead and wrote a few additional words anyway and here
they are.

I've tried the program and like it very much and I'm looking
forward to the promised added features, such as more reports. So
far Family Tree Legends has not become my main genealogy software
as I'm usually slow to make the transition from my existing program
to a new one. It was a long time before I completely converted
from PAF to Family Origins (FO) and I expect I'll be just as slow
changing over to Family Tree Legends.

But I have used some features of Family Tree Legends with great
success. I haven't yet used it to create a new database but I did
import my gedcom from FO and it worked without a glitch. I also
used Smartmatching and got more results than I've ever got from any
online genealogy search engine.

And I've used it to upload my data to my account at Gencircles.com
-- see http://www.gencircles.com/users/feliix/10 . One nice
feature about uploading my data is whenever I make a change in my
data it is automatically uploaded. This works if you're currently
online, or you can make the change offline, then next time you have
Family Tree Legends running while you're online it will
automatically be uploaded at that time.

A similar feature is when there is an update of Family Tree Legends
software to download -- you just leave the program running a few
minutes while online and the update is automatically done for
you. Then just close and reopen Family Tree Legends and you now
have the updated version.

There are many more features of Family Tree Legends and you can
read all about them at
http://www.rootsforum.com/newsletter/#FamilyTreeLegends and at
http://www.gencircles.com/info/ftl .

While writing this letter to that other list I loaded up Family
Tree Legends to help remind me of some of the features as I hadn't
used it in a few days. At that time this morning I had version
1.05. For some reason I closed it out but reloaded it a few
minutes later and I discovered that a known bug no longer
existed! While I had the program open the first time it had
actually self-downloaded an unannounced update to version
1.06. Amazing!

Next using Smartmatching I browsed somebody's data on a family line
I have been researching. That researcher's data matched some data
I had recently researched and verified a few days ago and had added
to Family Origins. Today while using Smartmatching I elected to
"merge" that researcher's data (which was located at Gencircles)
with mine, and lo and behold that new data was in my database.

These are just some of the features one will find in Family Tree
Legends.

Best wishes,
David
