The significance will become apparent when we have the second Johannes
member's dna tested out to 37 markers. The marker which is a mismatch
between the two Johannes members right now is one which doesn't seem to
mutate (change) in as short a time as 250 years. The first Johannes member,
John J., showed two markers (mutation more than 250 years) in 37 which are
different from the Nicholas members and one marker which is expected to
change in the time period of about 250 years.
It is the three mismatches in 37 which indicate that Nicholas and Johannes
were not brothers. As said, we must await the test results for Jeffrey
Pontius for the markers between 26 and 37 to see if he properly belongs to
the Nicholas lines or possibly to the Johannes lines. For now, Jeffrey is an
exact match at 12 markers with the Nicholas line members. I am anticipating
the results out to 37 markers will be available by April.
The cause of the confusion has been that the PFA has identified both as
having a common ancestor in J1-7, George Puntzius, son of Johannes Pontius.
It took most of last week to establish the correct PFA identifier for
Jeffrey, which required a lot of re-examination of documentation. The
originally assigned PFA number, J1-73596212 was in error. The correct number
appears to be J1-73393212. Jeffrey's aunt, Joan Pontious Salamony, who
carries PFA number J1-7359622 in the PFA member lists, participated in the
re-examination of the documentation and now agrees with new PFA numbers
which we have deduced. What we found was several cases of the same name
appearing in the families of men bearing, again, the same name and the
resultant confusion which must have occurred in the past with other
investigators was avoided. Did it occur with our first Johannes member too?
We currently do not know.
