1.3 William POPE
Birth: 1634, Bristol, England
Death: 1700, Isle of Wight Co, VA
Occ: Original Land Owner
Reli: Quaker
8G E-mail "Hills of Wilkes Co, GA" Pope's descend from William Pope, b.
1634, Isle of Wight, VA, who married Marie Bridges. William is probably the
son of Richard Pope, a candlestick maker of Bristol, England.
(See Richard Pope, b. 1590, England, soap maker and merchant)
5I Descendant of William Pope (b. 1634), m. ca 1654, Mary Marie (ca
1640-1700), Born VA; original land owner, died 1700, VA.
12D In order to link without question William Pope (1) b. ca 1639 with son
Henry Pope b. 1663, a land patent and a land deed will be quoted. On July 25,
1665, a patent was granted to William Pope (1) of 950 acres in Isle of Wight
Co, VA near Indian Swamp (Great Book 5, p. 114). A part of same land was sold
by a son of the above William Pope (1), who was William Pope (2) (he has a
brother named Henry Pope). William Pope (2) of Nasemond Co, VA for 4500 lbs
tobacco and ten shillings sells to Thomas Price 200 acres in Isle of Wight
Co, VA near Indian Swamp, touching Godfrey Hunts's land, Everett's land and
being part of a patent granted to my father, William Pope (1), late of
Nasemond Co, deceased. Patent dated July 25, 1665. Deed dated Feb. 1st 1706/7
(Isle of Wight Book, 1704-1715, p. 48).
13G2 The William Pope who sold land 1706/7 was not William Pope the
immigrant, but one of his two sons named William. William the immigrant was
dead by this time, as is shown by the Quaker records.....
William Pope, b. ca 1630-1635,, d. between 1695 and 1705, was the ancestor of
this branch of the Popes. He patented land in Nansemond Co, VA, 1656, 1662,
and 1665. (Great Book 4, p. 89 and 406; Book 5, soon after returning home.
References to this visit and his death appear in Nansemond Co, records.
12D Note that the land patent of William Pope (1) dated July 25, 1665, and
the land sold by his son William Pope (2) mentioned that it was a part of the
Land Patent of July 25, 1665. From the above, two things in particular can be
proved. First, that William Pope (1) had a son, William Pope (2); second that
William Pope (1) died before Feb 1st 1706/7, since his son William Pope (2)
stated that his father, William Pope (1), was deceased when the deed was
dated, Feb 1, 1706/7.
12D To prove that William Pope (2) had a brother, Henry Pope (2nd
generation), the following is sited: Southern History Assoc. Pub. Vol. 6, p.
508. "William Pope and Marie, his wife, their children nativities recorded as
followeth: William Pope (2), son of William and Marie was born the 15th of
the eighth month 1662 (Aug 15, 1662). Henry, son of aforesaid, William and
Marie, was born the last of the 11th month 1663 (Nov 30, 1663); Alse, dau.
of aforesaid, William and Marie, was born the 8th month, 1667 (Aug 1667);
John Pope, son of aforesaid, William and Marie, was born on the 6th day of
the 8th month 1670 (Aug 6, 1670)." However, William Pope (1) was in Virginia
as early as 1656, as shown by the following: "On Oct 8 1656, William Pope
(1), received a grant for 190 acres in Nasemond Co, VA, adjoining Capt.
Thomas Godwin's land. Due said Pope for the transportation of four persons;
Obedience Perkins, John Godwin, Robert Beadle, (the 4th headright not
recorded) (Great Book 4, p. 89). With reference to the 1656 grant above, it
was, as was often the case in those days, renewed by the governor of VA in
1662. (Description on p.56 of12D).
We have a letter giving an account of Col. Nathaniel Pope, (Included with
Nathaniel Husband's Notes). It was written by Col. William Pope Dabney of
Powhatan Co, Va., who was the grandson of William Pope --the brother of
Nathaniel Pope. It was published in the Richmond Dispatch a few years ago.
(from an article in the Washington Chronicle, March 9, 1896).

William arrived in Virginia in 1655. Pg.227
15 William Pope received patent for land (Grt Bk. 4, p, 406, Richmond, VA,
1662). William was a Quaker, hence the following records From the Southern
History Assn. Publications Vol. 6, p 508:
William Pope and his wife, Marie, their children's nativities recorded as
follows: "William Pope son of aforesaid William and Marie was born the 15th
of the 8th month 1662; Henry 30 Nov. 1663; Alse was born 8th month 1667; John
Aug. 6th 1670."
16B William Pope and his wife Mary (or Marie) with their childeren's
nativities as copied from Hinshaw's Encyclopedia--The Virginia Publication of
American Quaker Records, Vol VI, pages 22,23,24 and 34.
William Pope lived in Nacemun (Nansemond) Co, VA, and belonged to the
Chucatuck Meeting. In 1673, George Fox, a Quaker preacher came from Maryland
to Virginia to hold meetings in Nancemun (Nansemond) Co, VA. Chucatuck
Records were begun in 1673 at George Fox's suggestion. The meetings were held
in private homes because the English government was against these Quakers.
First, many of the settlers were Puritans. Among early converts to the
Quakers (Friends) were the families Boddy, Pope and many others in Nansemond
and Isle of Wight Counties.
The earliest Quakers suffered persecutions in Isle of Wight Co. resulting in
few records being kept.
15 On 8 Oct 1656, William received grant for 196 acres in Nansemond Co, VA,
adjoining Capt. Thos. Godwin's land, due William Pope for the transportation
of four persons (Grt Bk. 4, p, 89, Richmond, VA).In 1662, granted land in
Richmond, VA (Grant Bk. 4, p.406). Later granted 200 acres in same Co. On
July 25, 1665, patent granted to William Pope for 950 acres in Isle of Wight
Co, VA.
12A Although most of the Nansemond records burned during the Civil War, there
are some existing records which refer to William Pope visiting England in the
1690's and returning to Nansemond where he died thereafter (Nance p. 464).

1663, 11, 30; Alse, b. 1667, 8, -; John, b. 1670, 8, 6.
1708, 2, 11. William Pope, Nansemond Co, VA; married in Western Branch
Meeting House, Mary Haile, Nansemond, Co, VA.
1708, 2, 8. William Pope, Nansemond Co, VA, gave a paper of explanation
concerning some business transaction of his father William Pope, who being in
England some yr. past and died soon after his return to Virginia the said
William and brother Henry & William's wife took over the matter involved
which was settled to satisfaction.

Hello Mr. Keith Pope;
I am a 9th generation Pope from William Pope b 1634 in Bristol , Eng. came to
the Isle of Weigh abt 1650, at least first found there in 1856 as he patented
his first land at that time.William m Marie ,dau of Joseph and Hester Pitts
Bridger in 1860, the had three sons and one dau, that we know of. Williams
gsons moved into Edgecombe Co. as I have found several there.I desc from
Williams's son Henry, his son William, his son William Jr. Have a copy of
William Jr.;s will from Wake Co. N.C. This William's son Charles m there in
1797, moved to Tn. out from Nashville by 1810, next he was found in Henderson
Co. Tn. in 1820. Charles's son Sandy G. Pope was my great gfather, b in 1824,
my gfather b in 1849, my dad b in 1889, I was born in Gibson Co. Tn. in 1929.
You and I do not have typical Pope names. All of the old Pope named kids after
relatives; James, John, William, Joseph and etc, I had three brothers named
James William and John. My mom was so tired of having babies by the time I
came
, so I was named for the family dog, ROVER.
Nice to met another Pope interested in Pope genealogy, wish I could help with
you search but don't remember any of the name being in my line, except Leroy.
I
think someone is looking for a Col. Leroy Pope, one Col. Leroy was from the
Henry Pope line, the son of the first William.
Good luck and if I see anything about you line will yell.

17D A grandson of John Pope was George Pope who lived in this area (Virginia

George Pope's father and mother.)
Greetings from another POPE!!
In 1743 William Pope Isle of Wight CO VA had four sons, Joshua, Isaac,
William, and Nathan. At that time there were more than one Isaac Pope in the
county so I have not been able to prove that my Isaac was William's son.
Since my Isaac named one of his children Nathan, I am listing William as my
Isaac's father until I can prove otherwise. If you can connect anywhere -

will of John Watts, which states as follows: "I, John Watts etc...I do give
to my daug. Sarah Pope etc. I make my son, John Watts, and my son-in-law,
Henry Pope to be whole and sole executors." This will was proved in open
court, Isle of Wight, VA Feb 9, 1697. This Sarah Pope received a unique
legacy from William Faircloth. His will Jan 9, 1727 (Will Book 3, p. 96, Isle
of Wight) contains the following: "Item----I give and bequeth to Sarah Pope,
wife of Henry Pope, the Grinding Tole from all the corn she brings for her
family's use to the mills during her natural life to have that liberty
whenever the mill shall grind." (IOW 3-96). (Also in12A).

acres for transportation of persons. 10R106, 110, 257: Henry Pope owned 480
acres of land in Isle of Wight.
5I Henry Pope (1663-1728) m. 1682 Sarah Watt (ca 1665-ca 1740).
12A Henry Pope mentions two cousins in 1728 will & I (author of research)
have placed them as William's, since Edward was not John's child.
16B Henry Pope received a deed gift from Henry Bozeman 8 Feb 1685, in
addition to the land inherited from his father, William Pope. Henry Pope made
gifts of land in Isle of Wight Co, VA to his children.
12A One fact to keep in mind in sorting out all of the legal acts of Henry
Pope's sons is that William, John, Richard & Jacob could write their names.
Little is published on Henry's children; William, Jacob, Thomas and Samuel,
therefore a "best guess" has been used in establishing their families.
