Earlier posted to Prussia list. Just one other question for now-anyone
have any ideas about the meaning and linguistic origin of the name
Kudert. It's rare in Germany (mostly found in northern Germany).
Family legend says we had come from France (Hugenuot refugees during
Frederich der Grosse's time?) Yet, most people in Germany took me for
Dutch. Thanks, Bill

I've been monitoring the web for a while and all this talk of Bromberg
and Posen finally got me to input.

My grandmother Hedwig Anna KUDERT (b. 13 Aug 1891, d. 19 Apr 1972) came
to the States on the S.S. Main from Bremen, arriving at Baltimore on 6
June 1911. She went to live in Wellman, IA with her sister Emilie.

She came from Kruschin colony, kreis Bromberg, Provinz Posen, Preussen,
Germany. The family was registered at Pawlowke (pol. Pawlowek), a
nearby village. Her school still stands, as does the church.
Unfortunately, the German Lutheran cemeteries were almost obliterated by
the Poles when they "ethnicly cleansed" the region after the end of
WWII. The few remaining ethnic Germans are old and trying to restore
what they can with the help of Prussian and Bromberg gemeindschaften.

Hedwig's siblings were:
August (b. 1873)
Emilie Henriette (b. 14 Dec 1875 in Prondy near Bromberg)
came to US
Auguste Wilhelmine (b. 27 Dec 1877 Prondy)
Ida Florintine (b. 16 Feb 1881
Pawlowke) came to US
Gustave
Ernst
Edvart
(Hedwig)
Lydia (b. 1895 Pawlowke) came to US
Frederick (b. 26 Dec 1896) came to US

Parents: Julius Karl KUDERT (b. 11 Sept 1848, Polichnow; d. 15 May 1905)

married 1 Dec 1872 to-
Wilhelmine THIEM (b. 13 Jan 1851, Gogolin; d. 4 Dec 1929)

I can go back a couple more generations but this is enough for now.
What I'm trying to get at is what became of the family? In 1919, the
Allies gave Bromberg to the Poles. Germany took it back in 1939, and
then lost it forever in 1945. I haven't found an easy way the access
the refugee records after the wars. I'd like to eventually find out
what got my great aunt Emilie to come to Iowa. Hope that my info helps
someone and they can fill some of my blanks.
