I've never read Angus Baxter's book "In Search of Your German Roots."
However, Mr. Baxter books are in the nature of "In Search of Your
Fill-in-the-Blank Roots." That leads me to believe that he's probably very
good on the basics that are common to all research and fairly light (or at
least second-hand) on the types of issues that are specific to the research
of a given country. And, Germany is a particularly difficult area to cover
in a book because of its size and history. It's much more complex than
Scotland for example. The chapter on emigration within and out of Germany
would be sizable, as you can't just talk about Germany, but have to discuss
Sachsen, Pommern, Hessen, Baden, Wuerttemberg, etc., individually.
