IMHO, this assumption is not correct. According to Hans Bahlow
("Deutschlands geographische Namenwelt") the old German word "hag" has two
meanings: 1. bushes, thicket, brushwood, 2. moor, bog. The second meaning
is extinct and unknown in modern German but Bahlow claims "hag" to be still
used as an English dialect word for bog. The town name "Hagen" could be
derived from either meaning.
