Do not give up on your search on this list as suggested. We have known for
years that our GF and his brothers came from Posen. We searched and
searched for him. We knew he was in the Prussian Army, because we have a
picture of him in his Prussian Uniform. Prussia came right over near
Posen. We found on our GF's letters of intent for naturalization, that he
was from Neustadt. More searching.... We found that Neustadt (German)
basically translated to Nowe Miasto! We found Nowe Miasto on the Warta
(river) just a few miles SE of Posen. There we had somone look up some
church records, and found out GGF & GGM there. But I think this may have
been considered East Prussia, but I have heard it also called West Prussia
because it was the Western part of the Russian controlled part of Poland. In
our searching, we did find another Nowe Miasto (Neustadt) in the Posen area,
so don't give up on the POSSEN List.

for Neustadt, Westprussia you are in the wrong list.
have a look at the website
http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp
type in Neustadt und in the field "Part of.." type in Westpreussen.
You can see that LDS have a lot of films from churchbooks and civil
registrations, which will contain the year you are searching your Erich
Reinhard GABRIEL.
First you have to find out the confession. Then you can order the films at
your next Family History Center. You can also find the FHCs at the website
of LDS.
Believe me you take more pleasure in reading the old churchbooks as you can
find also siblings and the godparents and with a little luck also the
marriage and the birth of the parents.
You know the exact birth date so you are able to find the birth entry
quickly.
