I appreciate the information about the military service requirements received from Gerd and Ernst...Does anyone know at what level of government (local village, 'county seat', etc) that the permission to emigrate would be filed? Was there an age limit to the need to get permission? Two men in question had been in army:
One (Otto E. Rudloff) was born in Belsin 1857 but his younger sister was born in Gorai 1867 so assume he was living near there when he turned 20 in 1877..these are villages less than 10 miles from Czarnkow, so is that where he would be required to submit his papers?
Second (August Zellmer) obit said he served in army from 1864-66 and then again in Franco-Prussian War (1870?)..and he emigrated from Jankendorf..he didn't emigrate until 1890 when he was 58 years old...would he still have need to file an affidavit? Jerri in CA
