Tar has been made out of many organic substances, from mineral coal or
brown coal or wood, mainly wood with much resin. It was used for tar
dye, roofings, and sealings. There was carriage tar for greasing and
ships tar for caulking ships and taring cables (ropes). The process also
yielded charcoal with a variety of uses.
