| Posen List,
|
| Were the Lutheran faith considered Protestant during the mid
| 1800s? What was
| the faith definition? Was Catholic the predominant religion,
| with any other
| religion classified as Protestant, since they were all considered
| fallen away
| from the main catholic faith?
|
| We are still fighting religious and political wars, tyranny and terrorism
| today! It has not ended and the world has become an arena of fear,
| persecution and retribution.
|
| Thank you again,
|

Dear Ms. Canfield,
The Netze district was acquired by Prussia in 1772. Before that some
Germans lived in the area, but they were a minority. Prussia started
at once to draw settlers from many other provinces to the area, most
of them were Protestants. The difference is the confession of faith,
or the creed. Lutherans have the Augsburg confession, French reform-
ed have the Heidelberg catechism. Later on both were merged into the
Union church of Prussia, but some Lutherans remained independent.
Therefore Evangelical or Protestant is generally the same, but there
are also "Old Lutherans", the independent churches. The Germans were
mostly Protestants, whereas the Poles were traditionally of catholic
faith. It is however not possible to draw a clear line here, neither
can this be done by analysing the names. Germans could be catholics,
and have German or Polish names. The same applied to Poles, but this
was more seldom the case, especially of them being Protestants.
Concerning past, present and future religious and political wars, it
may be of interest that I have written a book about this (in German)
which can be down-loaded as shown below. For more information please
contact me privately.
Most cordial regards from Luxembourg
Gerd Müllenheim
