Dear Gerd, dear Listers;

Adding some words to your information abt Bydgoszcz its worth saying, that the history of the town is much longer than the Prussian rule. The kings castle (castellany) in that place was grounded in 12/13-th century. From 1309 the castle for a short time was ruled also by Teutonic Knights, and then again by the Kingdom of Poland. As the town had been growing, in 1346 king Casimir the Great granted to it the town laws and gave the coat of arms, that is used til today. For a long time the main Royal Mint was placed in Bydgoszcz, and on many gold and silver coins of Poland may be found a small arms with three towers and also letters CB (Civitas Bidgostiensis). The merchants were of various nations - Polish, German as well as from Italy and Nederland. The town become Prussian after the partitions of Polish Republic in 1772 and have been under that rule 150 years (excluding short time of Napoleonian wars), til the fall of Prussian empire, when came back to Poland.

This is only to express, that some of the German merchants families and also the farmers families living in town of Bromberg and the surrounding towns, villages and colonies inhabited the territory of that province much earlier than the Prussian State came there, and got their privileges and laws from the kings who were rulers of the province, not from the Prussian officials. The propaganda (as well Polish and German) very often suggested that the German settlers in Posen came there with Prussian army and used that argumentation to give reasons to deport German speaking people from that province after WW2.

(it doesnt mean I do not see the positives of Prussian state officials, but not only in Posen province, but also in German provinces of Rheinland, Sachsen or Hessen they were usually considered as soldiers without sense of humor)

All the best to all of you

Robert
