the Polish Army of the Congress Kingdom
of Poland fought the Russians in 1831 Russo-Polish War. I failed to mention
that the majority of the Polish Army, about 70,000 men, avoided capture by
escaping to Prussian-partitioned Poland. The Prussians had a six-year
conscription into their army for men between the ages of 20 to 28. The
Russians and Austrians had similar conscription's. The stimulus for
"Germanization" through state education was the Prussian Army's demand for
literate recruits. By 1901, 99% of the recruits from the province of Posen
could write and speak German.
