Border Dispute ?

In a sense today's Germany is very much within the old borders of the old
Imperial Germany. NO additional territory has been added, but much of it was
lost.

Gerd: Let me clarify what I meant and perhaps you will understand my
statement. By saying there was no place called "Germany" at that time, I
neglected to differentiate between the Country we call Germany today,
and the German Empire, which encompassed a much larger region, including
Prussia, Bavaria, the Imperial Territories, etc, etc. I could be wrong
but I believe when most beginning U.S. researchers start out, they will
interpret "Germany" on a U.S. census entry as only being within the
confines of the current Germany borders, which can result in lots of
confusion and frustration.

I certainly didn't intend to infer that there was no German Empire, just
that the country as we know it today was not within the same boundaries.

Dear Diana,

Germany today is only a fraction of the original German lands
which included Alsace and especially Prussia. This was German
since the 13th century when the Teutonic Knights found an un-
developed territory there. Just take a look at the borders of
about 1600 when you find that Pommerania and Silesia belonged
to the first German Empire.

Germany was always the area from the Maas to the Memel rivers
as we used to sing in the national anthem. Certainly this was
always well understood by all Germans and as such shown sure-
ly also in all U.S. census entries.

What exactly do you mean by the Imperial Territories?

Most cordial regards from Luxembourg
