Joel: This will be a tough one. The uniform resembles the Russian
Archangel Regiment (1812-1919) but I truly suspect it is German or
Prussian. The big problem is that there were so many different uniforms,
depending upon the governmental division the soldier was from. A tintype
could be dated anywhere between 1856-1900, give or take a few years.
Here is a link to illustrations of military uniforms from the German
Empire: http://www.grosser-generalstab.de/sturm/sturm20.html

If you scroll to the bottom and click the book on the left, a window
will pop up. You can select your dates from the lists across the top.
Then scroll down on each page to go forward (right book). Many of the
uniforms are similar, but the notable differences are in the cuff
decoration, if the cuff buttons go around or up and down the sleeve and
whether the jacket is single or double breasted. The hardest thing to
match was the cap. I found similar ones in the 1871-1914 era. Good luck.
