Hello List Members,

A recent posting to another list started me thinking ......

>"At one time, there was a charge to have this event (baptism/christening)
(sic) entered into >the Parish records of a few pence. Whilst in
today's terms this is negligible, in those days >some families could
not afford it. The result was that they selectively had the entry made.
>Boys were nearly always added as it may have had an effect on inheritance
etc, but the >girls were left off as they were considered of less
importance in a legal sense".

Could this same scenario have applied to the baptisms of children,
of either the Evangelical and/or the Roman Catholic faith, in the area
of Posen and/or West Prussia ca. 1800-1850s? Or was the event always
entered into the church book(s), as a matter of course, regardless of
the gender of the child or the family's circumstances & ability to pay?
In other words, a stipend was not required as a condition of entry
onto the parish register.

Any thoughts along these lines would be of interest.

Bette

Dear Bette,

In Evangelical churches all services have to be free of charge. It is
said: "freely it has been given to you, freely give." (Matthew 10:8).

Most cordial regards from Luxembourg
