Hi Brian,

Were your ancestors Catholic? My husband has Catholic ancestors from Zl~otkowo, which is apparently too small to have its own church. I have found records for them in the nearby parish of Kleczew, which has been microfilmed by the LDS. According to the LDS website (www.familysearch.org), Jewish records are also available for Kleczew.

One marriage record for a Zl~otkowo ancestor also noted that marriage banns were announced in the parish of Budzisl~aw Kos~cielny. We haven't had any luck finding ancestors there, despite that promising lead, but perhaps your ancestors may have attended church there.

I must point out that in most cases the names and places on these documents
have been spelt phonetically and anglicized. Have shown what I believe

Age upon arrival: 34 years Place of birth: Slot Kovo Poland Prussia (believe
that it should beZlotkowo).
Believe John was unable to read or write as "X" is his mark in lieu of
signature on naturalization papers

Death certificates for John & wife Eva:

Family name now shown as: SMIDT (for both)
Died: 1 August 1900 (John)
21 July 1900 (Eva)
Age at death: John 79 years
Eva 82 years
Parents: None shown for John
Eva: father William ( Wilhelm?) Willard
(could also be Villard?)
mother Eva Polfus (could be
Polsfuss or Polsfus?)

Children shown as living: Frederick ( Friedreich/Fredric?) 50 years old
Charles (Karl ?) 47 years old.(Charles
death certificate place of birth as "Posen") Children shown as being
deceased: Frederick
Robert
Maria
Paulina
Rosa
Unknown name female
To the best of my knowledge these children died prior to John & balance of
the family coming to Australia

As I have not done any research in this area (country) any guidance and/or
assistance would be greatly appreciated and received
