Hello Matthias,
Bette means the surname Caro or Karo. I supposed that it is of Italian
origin, but maybe Bette's information of Jewish roots is right. Another
possibility could be that it is a form of Karow, which is a place name in
Pomerania and Saxonia. The pronounciation of Karow and Karo is the same.
We have found some Karo/Caro in the Wladyslawow (Turek) records at the
beginning of the 19th century.
