A day laborer (Tagearbeiter) was somemone who had not had any professional training and who had to earn his money by various works he could find without permanent employment. The payment was generally poor and in many cases a serious problem when a family had to be nourished. Usually these were the younger sons where the money of their education was not available. Several of my ancestors were Tagearbeiter.

Betreff: [POSEN] Day Laborer ?
My wife's gr-gr-grandfather lived in Kries Obornik (Owinsk, Lang Goslin, Chutowo, etc) from 1834-1881. He was identified as a "day laborer". What kind of work did "day laborers" actually perform ?
Also, was there a reason so many Germans emigrated to the USA in the 1870's and 80's ? Bruce J of Maplewood, MN.
