Hi Georgina

A map of the coalfields of GB shows a coalfield extending from Oswestry up
to Wrexham. It is likely that coal mines were at or close to Newbridge
(Clwyd) as well as Oswestry. I used to pass one at Chirk. I believe they
are all long since closed.

Derwen geology would be older rocks - perhaps a carboniferous limestone area
or earlier still.

Derwen - Oswestry = 27 miles
Derwen - Newbridge (Clwyd) = 15 miles
Newbridge (Clwyd) - Oswestry = 7.5 miles

Have you asked questions on the coalminers' list? It's at

As usual you must put the word <request> in the heading and the word
<subscribe> in the body of the text (without the brackets).

Good Luck
