David,

I can't answer how "they" do it, but how I did. Frankly, I was lucky to
have had a family in the Wesh Tracts of Pennsylvania with William Penn.
Several books have been written on this line and several pedigrees were
located in Quaker records for these families.

Those books and pedigrees lead me to the town in Wales (Fron Goch, which
then was only the farm from which my family came) and what made my lineage
this easy is that the line connects to some princes and kings of Wales. I
live in the US, so a trip to the Salt Lake Library helped me discover many
more old books on Welsh genealogy and copies of some of the old Welsh
manuscripts --in Welsh! Of course, the problem always is to determine the
validity of these old books, etc. and to understand when the manuscripts
were written. (These manuscripts being little more than lineage records)
I understand that some have been researched well by historians and deemed
very accurate.

This last summer I visited the old fferm Fron Goch (built in the 14th
century according to the owner), and I plan to return this summer to
research the family and try to "prove" what I have found so far with
primary records. I want to visit all the towns this line settled, as well.
My family came to American in 1698 (this line --some came before and after
that), and it was so wonderful to find that this old farm is currently in
working order and a B & B! I can't wait to get back!

Wishing you the best of luck,
Emily
