Re: EDWARDS/COOPER of Newtown, Montgomeryshire
Dear Peggy Edwards
The 1891 census for Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn was searched for any John
and Martha EDWARDS husband & wife team. I regret to say that none has
materialised. There are plenty of Johns and Martha but with wrongly named
spouses. There is a Martha EDWARDS in Arthur court named as wife with
husband not at home but she is only 32. There are tow families of COOPER
each without children present. Timothy 36, leather dresser, and Margaret
34 at 6 Station Court, Newtown, born Llandysilio and Llanmerewig
respectively and Stephen 65, china dealer, and Sarah 76 in Frankwell,
Llanllwchaiarn, born Wrockwardine (Shropshire) and Loughton (Staffordshire)
respectively. I can only assume that the EDWARDS parents emigrated in 1890
as well. When re-checking the 1881 census, you should bear in mind that,
on many occasions, the enumerators did not enter the full Christian names
and that your John Henry EDWARDS may have been returned merely as John
EDWARDS.
Re: EVANS/HAMER
Dear Mary Paton
Glad you found the MontGenSoc package of interest. We will be replacing
the library listing shortly and a substitute booklet will be sent out. We
hope that this can be achieved with the next issue of our journal, Record.
The record of the marriage of Edward EVANS and Mary HAMER will only show
the names of their respective fathers and will not include the mothers. As
you are a member of the MontGenSoc, I am willing to try and find and to buy
the marriage certificate for you from the Sup. Reg. in Newtown.
Thereafter, if you wish, I should be able to track Edward and his parents
in the 1851 (or 1861) census. The Mochdre entry which you discovered is
quite possibly the correct one. Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain is a parish in
the north-east of Montgomeryshire about nine miles NNE of Welshpool; it
does not sound a likely place for your researches.
Re: Elizabeth JONES
Dear Jean Spence
Elizabeth JONES could have been in service anywhere in the numerous nearby
parishes in Montgomeryshire (or even Radnorshire or Shropshire). You will
recall that her father himself had wandered afar. The fact that Elizabeth
was born in Carno is not much assistance as there are likely to have been
others with the same name in the age range born in that parish. In any
event, the head of the household in which she was placed may have returned
any age or any place as that of her birth without reference to her. I
think that I will have to pass on the 1871 census on this one.
